BOOTLEG ON ECMC 2010
An incredible weekend retold through the eyes of Matteo, 32 years-old, Milanese bike messenger working for UBM. Matteo has lived in Milan for the last 5 years and has always used a bicycle to get around. “I think it’s the best way to get around Milan, and that’s not all, I’d like people to have an always greater awareness of this mode of transport.” But let’s not get off the subject… this isn’t Matteo’s first ECMC event, he arrived on the shores of the Danube for this long 3 day weekend (with extremely hot weather forecast), instead he is a sense returning: “My desire to come to Budapest this year was born of the desire to meet up again with people I haven’t seen in a long time, enjoy myself and enjoy a small holiday.” The atmosphere at ECMC is, in fact, that of a big family out together wanting to enjoy itself. The location is spectacular, the old ring of cement of the Millenaris Velodrome is used for the Sprint races, and in the centre bike polo is played and the trackstand competition contested. In the stands there are rivers of beer and plenty of music. “It was a surprise to find myself in the final of the trackstand with the other 7 finalists, unexpected but plenty of fun.” In the evening th event moves to the island of Csepel, the industrial area which is already half redeveloped. And it’s here that the main race will take place; an incredible venue, amongst old chimney stacks and production of heavy iron and steel in the not so distant past. But the pavè is extreme and the tram tracks a possible danger. “I enjoyed the main race greatly even if I suffered a pretty heavy fall and didn’t qualify for the final. The course was fun and the terrain difficult, it was stimulating to navigate across it as fast as possible.” Matteo rode the race aboard a BOOTLEG Mystic black with whom he has developed a very special relationship. “It’s been my companion for so long now, it’s always proved itself trustworthy and reliable regardless of its quotidian maltreatment. I’ve learnt to appreciate it under all sorts of weather conditions and terrain… I’ve grown strangely affectionate of it!!!” The weekend ended with everybody promising to meet up again in Madrid next year.

WHITE BIKES
THE BIKE OF AN AUTHENTIC IRONZEN
Even the bike of Aldo Calandro is like no other known bike. It’s like a racing bike the way a buffalo is like a horse, but it still comes closer to this category which it finds somewhat foreign than it does to the so-called mountain bike. It ’s a bike for a citizen of the planet, made to handle the cobblestones, cross the tracks, ignoring the uneven pavement, but also ride off on a tangent, take a pass and accelerate up to the other side of Italy. For Aldo is, as are more and more other bikers, inspired by the new psychedelia, the bicycle is a means for changing your life, a kind of "positive drug" that multiplies the energy instead of destroying it, to actively seek changes in consciousness changing one’s personal dimension of space and time. It is not made for road race, no, it only made only for inner races: "It is not a bike suitable for those who feel like victims of traffic.”
He says, to those who expect society to solve all their problems, “I start to change myself, here and now, riding that bike. In this sense, I’m a lawbreaker, and I hope one day the rule will be to be outside the rule: then we will have solved many things. " Aldo is a record producer and he’s called Aldo Rock. And Cinelli called his bike Bootleg, that is to say a pirated recording. "All great artists - Aldo notes - have always favoured the unauthorized discographies, greeting the public at the beginning of the concert with ’Are you ready bootleggers’?"
Bootleg was born here! More than 10 years on the instrument is refined in a continuous evolution to aid modes of self-exploration...
